My Process

LITTLE BIT ABOUT MY PROCESS:

  1. USING ONLY ^ 6 STONEWARE CLAY I THROW MOST OF MY POTS ON THE WHEEL WITH A FEW BEING HAND BUILT DURING THE CLAY’S SOFT STATE.
  2. WHEN THE CLAY HAS DRIED TO THE LEATHER HARD STAGE I TRIM THE POTS ON THE WHEEL. THIS IS ALSO WHEN I WILL CHATTER, CARVE IN A DESIGN AND GLAZE THEM.
  3. THEN I WAIT FOR THE POTS TO DRY FULLY . IF THEY ARE PUT IN THE KILN WHEN STILL MOIST THEY WILL MOST LIKELY EXPLODE CREATING A MAJOR MESS. DRYING TIME WILL MOST LIKELY TAKE 2-7 DAYS DEPENDING ON THE THICKNESS OF THE WALLS AND FEET.(SOME POTTERS DO UTILIZE THEIR KILN FOR DRYING THEIR POTS BUT I LIKE TO BE ABLE TO VERIFY THEY ARE DRY BEFORE PUTTING THEM IN).
  4. I ONLY DO A SINGLE FIRING MEANING THAT THE POTS ARE GLAZED WHILE IN THE LEATHERHARD OR GREENWARE STATE. THIS MEANS I HAVE TO HANDLE THEM WITH GREAT CARE SO THEY WON’T BREAK WHILE I’M GLAZING THEM…..THE DRIER THEY GET THE MORE BRITTLE THEY BECOME.
  5. I FIRE THE POTS TO REACH ^ 5/6 WHICH MEANS REACHING A TEMPERATURE OVER 2200° FAHRENHEIT MAKING THE STONEWARE VERY STRONG AND DURABLE. IT TAKES ANYWHERE FROM 9 1/2 TO 12 HOURS FOR ME TO SINGLE FIRE MY POTS TO REACH ^ 5/6 .
  6. TYPICALLY I WAIT TIL’ THE NEXT DAY TO LET THE KILN COOL DOWN BEFORE OPENING TO SEE RESULTS.
  7. EVERY TIME I HAVE OPENED THE KILN I HAVE BEEN REWARDED WITH A SURPRISING ARRAY OF COLORS AND POTS…….. FOR THIS REASON I URGE OTHER FOLK TO TAKE UP POTTERY AS A HOBBY THAT IS SO SATISFACTORY ON MANY LEVELS. SO YOU TOO CAN PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.
